About Thai Tones

Thai has five tones: mid, low, falling, high, and rising. The tone of a syllable is determined by:

  • The class of the initial consonant (high, mid, or low)
  • Any tone marks present (◌่ ◌้ ◌๊ ◌๋)
  • Whether the syllable is live or dead
  • The vowel length (for dead syllables)
