Words You're Probably Mispronouncing

ขอบคุณ (thank you)
Wrong: kop-koon
Right: kòrp-kun
The "r" is subtle, almost silent. Don't over-pronounce it.
สวัสดี (hello)
Wrong: sa-wa-dee
Right: sà-wàt-dee
The "t" is soft, almost like a "d". Not crisp.
เท่าไหร่ (how much)
Wrong: tao-rai
Right: tâo-rài
Use falling tone on both syllables. Crucial for shopping!
อร่อย (delicious)
Wrong: ah-roy
Right: à-ròi
Both syllables are low tone. Roll the "r" slightly.

Sounds That Don't Exist in English

ng
เงิน (ngern) - money
Start with "ng" sound like "singer". It feels weird but it's essential.
bp
ไป (bpai) - go
Between "b" and "p". Unaspirated. Hold back the puff of air.
dt
ตลาด (dtà-làat) - market
Between "d" and "t". Again, no puff of air.
