Reading Thai Script

Step-by-step process for reading Thai syllables and words

How to Read a Thai Syllable

กิน

1 Consonant: ก (k)
2 Vowel: -ิ (i, short)
3 Final: น (n)
4 Tone: mid (no mark, mid-class consonant)
Result: /gin/ — "to eat"

The Reading Process

1

Identify the consonant(s)

Find the base consonant letter. Check for consonant clusters.

2

Locate the vowel components

Look around the consonant (before, after, above, below) for vowel marks.

3

Check for tone marks

Look above the consonant for tone marks (่ ้ ๊ ๋).

4

Determine the tone

Combine consonant class + vowel length + tone mark + syllable type (live/dead).

5

Pronounce

Put it all together: initial consonant + vowel + final consonant + tone.

The course gives you syllable-reading practice at every stage.

Live vs. Dead Syllables

Syllable type affects tone determination

Live Syllables

Characteristics:

  • End with a long vowel sound
  • End with sonorant consonants (ง, น, ม, ย, ร, ล, ว)
  • Sound continues, flows

Examples:

มา (maa - come) ดี (dee - good) งาน (ngaan - work)

Dead Syllables

Characteristics:

  • End with a short vowel
  • End with a stop consonant sound (/k/, /p/, or /t/)
  • Sound stops abruptly

Final Stop Sounds:

All stop consonants reduce to just three sounds in final position:

  • /k/ - ก, ข, ค, ฆ all become final /k/
  • /p/ - บ, ป, พ, ภ, ฟ all become final /p/
  • /t/ - ด, ต, ฎ, ฏ, ท, ธ, ฑ, ฒ, ถ, ฐ, ช, ซ, ศ, ส, ษ, จ all become final /t/

Examples:

ดิบ (dip - raw, final /p/) หมด (mot - all, final /t/) สุก (suk - cooked, final /k/)
Pro tip: Live syllables have more tone possibilities. Dead syllables are limited to lower tones (low or high, never mid/falling/rising in their base forms).

Common Consonant Clusters

When two consonants appear together at the start of a syllable, the second is usually ร or ล.

Cluster Rules

  • Tone determination: Based on the first consonant's class (if second is sonorant)
  • True clusters: ทร is pronounced "s", not "thr"
  • Pseudo-clusters: Some apparent clusters require a tiny vowel sound between them
  • Most common pattern: Stop consonant + ร or ล (e.g., กร, กล, ปร, ปล)

Your Learning Path

1

Master Middle-Class Consonants First

Learn the 9 middle-class consonants (ก จ ฎ ฏ ด ต บ ป อ). They have the most straightforward tone rules and form the foundation.

2

Learn Basic Vowel Forms

Start with simple vowels that appear after the consonant (-ะ -า -ิ -ี -ุ -ู). Practice reading CV syllables before adding complexity.

3

Add High & Low Class Consonants

Expand to high-class (11 letters) and low-class (24 letters). Notice paired consonants (e.g., ข-ค, ถ-ท, ผ-พ).

4

Complex Vowels & Tone Marks

Learn vowels that appear before or around consonants (เ- แ- โ- เ-ีย เ-ือ). Introduce tone marks gradually.

5

Tone Rules Mastery

Study live vs. dead syllables. Practice determining tone from consonant class + vowel length + tone mark combinations.

6

Real-World Reading Practice

Read signs, menus, social media. Focus on recognizing whole words rather than sounding out letter-by-letter. Speed comes with volume.
