You Already Speak Thai. Now Learn to Read It.
Read Thai teaches the script, not the language you already have. It starts at the first letter and teaches tones as rules. Modules 1–3 are free, with no card.

The gap is the script
You follow it, but you cannot read it
If you grew up hearing Thai, you may follow the conversation at the table and the show on the TV. The same words, written down, can look like decoration.
Beginner courses start in the wrong place
Duolingo has no Thai course for English speakers. If you already speak Thai, what is likely missing is the script.
The script has a lot of parts
44 consonants, vowels written before, after, above and below the consonant, tone marks, and no spaces between words. It is a system, and it can be learned as one.
Saturday school did not finish the job
If you went, it may have felt like a lot. This course is self-directed: you set the pace and there is no class. The cards do mark your answers, so you see what to review.
What you may already bring
If you grew up with spoken Thai, you are not starting from nothing.
Your ear
If you grew up hearing Thai, you may notice a wrong tone without having a name for it. Read Thai gives the names and the rules, so what you hear can be tied to the written form.
Words you already know
You may meet written words you have said all your life. The reading words in the course are ones to sound out, check against what you know, and hear in slow and natural-speed audio.
Context
If you grew up speaking Thai at home, you may already have a feel for polite particles and for how you talk to elders compared with friends. Read Thai does not spend time on that.
What you get
- 45 lessons covering 44 consonants by class, 28 vowel forms and all 4 tone marks.
- Tone rules from consonant class, vowel length, final sound and tone mark, shown on every card.
- 224 reading words split into syllables, with slow and natural-speed audio.
- A browser course on any device. Modules 1–3 are free, no card, no trial timer. After that, Lifetime access is $39 one-time.
It does not test your spoken Thai, teach handwriting, give pronunciation feedback or work offline. It teaches reading.
What reading gets you
The family group chat. A recipe notebook. A menu, a sign, a form at the district office. What you do with it is up to you. The course gives you the skill, and nothing else is assumed.
For the speaking side, Speak Thai is the companion product: situation packs of phrases with audio.
Common questions
I speak Thai at home but can't read it. Is Read Thai right for me?
If reading is the gap, yes. Read Thai is a script course: it starts at the first letter and builds up to reading words, so expect to begin with the letters. Modules 1–3 are free with no card, so a few evenings will show you whether the pace suits you.
I tried to learn the script before and stopped. What is different?
Read Thai teaches consonants by class (mid, high and low), because that class is what drives the tone rules. You learn the system, not only a list of 44 letters, and every card shows the rule that gives the tone.
My Thai is mixed with English. Does that matter?
No. Read Thai reads and teaches the script; it does not grade how you speak, and it does not ask you to speak.
How is this different from Thai school?
It is built for adults, runs in a browser at your own pace, and has no classroom. Lessons are short, and you decide when to do the next one.
Will it teach me to speak better too?
Not directly. Read Thai teaches reading, with audio so you hear each word as you read it. Speak Thai is the companion product for spoken phrases.
What does it cost?
Modules 1–3 are free, with no card and no trial timer. After that, Read Thai is a one-time Lifetime purchase, with no subscription.
