You do not need to be fluent to sit at their table. Learning the script is one way to stop being locked out of the writing on the screen, the shop front and the menu.

Where reading Thai shows up
The family group chat
If the messages arrive in Thai script and you paste each one into a translator, learning the letters is the first step out of that. Early on you will pick out names and the odd word; following a whole thread takes more vocabulary than this course covers.
Signs and menus, together
Start to sound out the prices, the names of dishes you already know and the sign above the shop. Unfamiliar words will still need a translator or your partner.
Names and tones with their parents
A wrong tone can change the word. Read Thai teaches the four things that decide a tone (consonant class, vowel length, final sound and tone mark), so you can work out how a name or a word sounds from the way it is written. It does not give you pronunciation feedback.
Words you start to recognise
The course includes 224 reading words, each split into syllables with slow and natural-speed audio, so the letters turn into words you can sound out.
What you get
- 45 lessons covering 44 consonants, 28 vowel forms and all 4 tone marks, with tone rules taught as rules.
- Slow and natural-speed audio for the course, so you hear how the written word sounds.
- A browser course. It runs on your phone, laptop or tablet, with nothing to install.
- Modules 1–3 free, no card, no trial timer. After that, Lifetime access is $39 one-time.
What it does not do: it does not listen to you speak, it does not work offline, and it will not teach you to hold a conversation. It teaches you to read.
For the speaking side: Speak Thai
Speak Thai is the companion for speaking: situation packs of phrases with slow and natural-speed audio, and a free 30-phrase sampler with no card.
Common questions
Do I need to read Thai to talk to my partner's family?
No, many people start by speaking. If you want to read what Thai friends and family write, you need the script, and romanization varies from one system and one writer to the next. Reading also lets you check how a word is pronounced from the way it is written, tones included.
Will Read Thai teach me to speak?
It teaches you to read, and it drills tones with audio so you hear them as well. It does not listen to you speak or give pronunciation feedback. For phrases you can say, Speak Thai is the companion product.
Is it free to start?
Yes. Modules 1–3 are free with no card and no trial timer. After that, Read Thai is a one-time Lifetime purchase, with no subscription.
How is this different from learning with my partner's help?
Your partner can say a word for you, but explaining why it takes a particular tone is hard for anyone who has never had to think about it. The course gives you the rules, so you can practise without turning every evening into a lesson.
Can I try it before I make an account?
Yes. The demo takes about a minute: you sound out one real Thai word, with no account and no email.
