Read your first Thai word in 60 seconds

One consonant, one vowel, one real word. This minute shows the method the Read Thai course teaches: you meet the parts, then sound the word out, with no romanization to lean on.

Transcript

  1. 0:00 You can read actual Thai script in about a minute. Here's how.
  2. 0:05 Thai words are built from consonants and vowels. Here's a consonant:
  3. 0:10 ก (kaw kai)
  4. 0:12 a hard K sound. Thai groups consonants into three classes: high, mid, and low.
  5. 0:17 This one is mid class, and a consonant's class helps decide the tone of anything built from it.
  6. 0:24 Add a vowel and you've got a real syllable:
  7. 0:27 กา (kaa)
  8. 0:29 Same consonant, now a whole word. Crow, if you're curious. You didn't memorize it. You read it, from the parts.
  9. 0:38 One more:
  10. 0:40 ดี (dii)
  11. 0:41 A new consonant and a new vowel, same method: meet the parts, then sound out the word.
  12. 0:49 That's the whole method: sound out real Thai script, one character at a time.
  13. 0:53 Try it yourself. The link's below, no account needed.

What you read in the video

  • ก kaw kai: a hard k sound, and a mid-class consonant. Its class is one of the things that decides the tone of a syllable.
  • กา kaa: the same consonant with a long "aa" vowel. It means crow.
  • ดี dii: a new consonant and a new vowel. It means good.

You read each word from letters you had just met, not from a memorized chart. The course works the same way from the first lesson onward, and the Thai tone rules come in step by step once you know enough letters to use them.
